Don’t let your Best Self 😇 become a Christmas Tree 🎄!

Hi everyone!,

I just came out of a Weekly Review session with my Building a Second Brain peeps. And I got some insight, and I was like oh this is a great one to share with everybody on goal setting and your best self related topic.

But before we get into that, you might be like, “What the heck is a Second Brain group?” So I took this course called Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte.

It's basically about personal knowledge management, but that's just not giving it credit at all because it's larger than that. it's like, how to think about how to use your first brain, your actual human brain, and how to use technology and digital platform or tools--it could be notebook, anything!--to be your second brain.

Because there's things that your first brain is good for like creativity, creation, connecting the dots on different things that your second brain, which is the organization piece of it, can help you with the creation. Because sometimes, as creators, we can't find anything that we've been saving, so there's a new way of thinking about how to capture information, how to organize it, and how to bring it together to create something.

And this can be for traditional project workers also in corporations, but there's people from all over the place, and all over the world doing this so it's actually a great group.

(For a great summary of the course, check out this 15 min vid using Miro).

On Friday mornings I'm rejoining it again to do our Weekly Reviews. There's a system where weekly...daily you’re supposed to review your stuff, weekly you review your stuff, monthly review your stuff, and also planning ahead.

At the end of the session, we reflect on what we've done, if you need some help, some tips and everybody's like, we're productivity nerds who want to help.

Somebody brought up that, we all want to be our best selves and activate our best self at all time, but doesn't always happen; our day-to-day busyness takes over.

So, she used this great analogy. You know, sometimes, our best selves 😇 are like a Christmas tree 🎄; we only bring it out and dust it off once a year!

Let’s say you create new habits in the new year, then you bust it out. And for her, she said, “Our best self is like, Christmas in the closet storage, and have to dust it out, ‘Oh yeah, I have my best self! Here's my highest aspiration. It looks actually really nice, but I never remember to look at it.’ “

So she wants to create another space…This is the review space, it's pretty like...I don’t wanna say dull, because it's not meant to be dull, it's meant to be super helpful for you actually, but it can be like...review your work.

This other person in a group wants to create another space where it's more like creativity, and this is where...or creation of anything, or making something...and she wants it to be like, bring your best self to this. We always have our best self, what we want to do, want to create, and we never make time for it.

Sometime, having a container of time and place, and well, virtual place, and a group of people who's like, “Hey, you keep saying you want to make this, and you keep having other things that come in away, so why don't we create the space that, this is the time you make that thing happen, and bring your best self here. What’s your best self that you want to create? This is the time to do that.”

I really loved her analogy with your best self. She’s like, it’s a Christmas tree 🎄, you bring it out once a year, so she wants to create that container so that you can come up more often. I thought was a great analogy to talk about that.

Hope it inspires you to think about,

how can you bring your best self on a day-to-day basis more often or maybe even once a week?

Sometimes thins are so busy, but my best self would do this, and then put that time that you can create in your calendar, call like my best self time, and only do something in that time that your best self would do.

Not your tired self, too to responsible self, conservative self, fear based self, busy self would do, but what would my highest aspirational, goal person would do?

And then maybe just an hour maybe just five minutes. Maybe you're like, “This is too scary for me!” You can just do a few minutes at a time, but try blocking out an hour and call your best hour, and then see what happens in that magical space!

And if you have friends or family or coworkers who are inspired this idea, invite them in and create that best self time together and commit.

In the beginning, set intention, “Hey, and this time...I keep putting off my poetry writing. I'm going to make sure in this hour, I write something on poetry, even some words. I'm gonna start research some words” that's fine. I don't know...I'm not a poet so I don't know how poets actually create their craft.

If somebody’s like, “ I never do yoga, so you are going to create a poem, but this time I need to do yoga, but at least we’re on video so there's that commitment,” then you do the yoga! You know, it's kind of like, I want to be my best at this time.

I really love that concept, so wanted to share with everybody!

If this idea resonates with you, like this video. 👍🏻
